The outer envelope of the Storm is the most essential part of a veritable multi-layer fortress around my MacBook Pro.
I use both AquaQuest’s Storm laptop case and its Wingman backpack cover as part of a layered system that has effectively saved me thousands of dollars and protected irreplaceable data.
I frequently travel with an $8,000 14” MacBook Pro and needed a solution for one-bag trips where I could not bring my briefcase-style waterproof hard case. Instead, the MacBook had to travel inside my carry-on backpack, both in flight and on foot, where it could be exposed to heavy rain, rough transportation, crowded buses, trains, and boats, or accidental drops.
Adding to the challenge, the backpack itself could not be fully waterproof or use a roll-top closure, and it needed a false-bottom laptop compartment. I also wanted a laptop sleeve with excellent impact protection and reinforced corners, but without a rigid shell.
Here is the solution I came up with:
First, I removed the neoprene sleeve from the outer waterproof envelope of the Storm. I still use that sleeve separately for other, less valuable items.
I then place the 14” MacBook Pro inside a tomtoc A13 Defender sleeve with reinforced corner protection. That goes inside the waterproof envelope of the 15” AquaQuest Storm, which then slips into the false-bottom laptop compartment of my full-size AER Travel Pack 3, made with a 1680D Cordura ballistic-nylon exterior. The laptop compartment has a weather-resistant YKK AquaGuard zipper.
I use the 15" version of the Storm because the tomtoc A13 is significantly thicker than the 14" MacBook Pro.
When conditions call for even more protection, I add the perfectly fitting AquaQuest Wingman rain cover for packs up to 40L, which I keep stored in the front pocket of the AER.
The result is my MacBook Pro TRAVEL FORTRESS.
This setup has now survived two monsoons, many heavy rainstorms, countless rough and crowded bus, boat, and train rides, and one memorable incident in which my backpack ended up in a two-foot-deep puddle.
My MacBook came out completely unscathed every time.
Unfortunately, both the AER Travel Pack 3 version I use and the AquaQuest “Small” Wingman for packs of 40L or less have been discontinued. The Storm, however, remains so useful to me that I plan to buy at least two more 15” cases as backups. They are that good!
